Natural Gas Management System

Project Brief

Southcentral Alaska is rich in natural gas, a primary energy source for Anchorage, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, and much of the Kenai Peninsula which together hold more than half the state’s population. Alaska’s largest natural gas provider, which supplies energy to 146,000 residential customers in Southcentral Alaska, had legacy software as part of its process of for managing and delivering gas safely and efficiently among suppliers and major gas customers.

In just four months using agile methodology, Wostmann developed an application for managing Gas. The new application provides a single source record, audit trail, standardized business processes, operational reports, and real-time displays. Our team met the challenge of ensuring functional design met user needs and the system could be implemented with limited availability of internal staff. Our team helped refine the functional requirements, created a product backlog, and led design, development, and testing.

The system resolved several issues with the existing business process such as extensive use of spreadsheets and manual data. In effect, the new system replaces legacy systems and manual data management with a more comprehensive system and business rules, reducing the possibility of errors and less day-to-day manual effort to manage.
