Fish and Game Permitting

Project Brief

Fish and game permitting is essential to best manage and sustain fish and game stocks to ensure equitable use and access for multiple user groups for today and the future.

Alaska’s fisheries provide more than just food to residents and visitors — they also play a critical role in the state’s economy, with a wholesale value of more than $4.5 billion per year. To ensure Alaskans stay fed, and the state’s economy stays healthy, the state must provide equitable access to multiple stakeholder groups while ensuring Alaska’s waters aren’t overfished and its fishing stock depleted. The same goes for wild game, which is harvested by 60% of rural Alaskans and consumed by 86% of rural households. Alaska’s fish and game permitting process is key to successfully managing fish and wildlife.

Technology has allowed businesses and organizations to both simplify and eliminate manual processes while enhancing the user experience. This was the goal of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADFG) when it contracted our team to reimagine its myADFG online store.

Wostmann modernized the myADFG online store to increase customer interaction and ease consumption of ADFG services and products, including electronic signature (eSign) capabilities and user experience. We identified and tested the platform, which allows customers to store harvest records, secured public facing webservices, and remediated backend systems. These projects served as the foundation for a subsequent build for the Alaska Fishing and Hunting Mobile Application.

Some of the milestone tasks for this project included Draw Hunt Change Application, eSigned Licenses and Permits, Fishing Harvest Reporting Enhancement, Harvest Recording by Phone, and Hunting Harvest Reporting. This project is an example of a licensing system for sportfish and hunting (non-commercial).
