Alaska DOT&PF Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) and Weigh in Motion System (WIM)
Project Brief
The Federal Highway Administration has maintained the HPMS nationwide highway information system since 1978, upgrading to a new GIS-enabled version over the last decade. The data is used for reporting to Congress on the state of highways, to inform state and federal highway managers of the state of their highway systems, and to allocate federal highway funding to states. The State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) maintains this dataset and data capability for Alaska as well as numerous other data systems as part of the State’s Traffic Monitoring System for Highways.
One element of this suite of highway database systems is the Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) system, collecting and reporting on traffic and vehicle-weight data. Of all the traffic monitoring activities, WIM requires the most sophisticated data collection sensors; the most controlled operating environment (strong, smooth, and level pavement in good condition, for example), and advanced equipment to set-up and calibrate. State highway managers rely on this data in near real-time to operate the State’s Traffic Monitoring System for Highways.
Wostmann Provided development and maintenance on the Department’s highway traffic systems. Our team supported annual HPMS submittals through data collection and processing of traffic data and played a key role in the upgrade to the new GIS-enhanced HPMS. We designed and implemented a WIM data warehouse and portal. Our team maintained the WIM Portal and data warehouse including database tuning, reporting, documentation, and training.
